Somali Government dismayed by the closures of Remittance companies’ Bank accounts in the United States, Europe, Asia  and Africa.

Dec 24, 2011 Transitional Federal Government of Somalia expressed its dismay over the closure of remittance and small money transfer companies’ accounts—including many that are in full compliance with the licensing, auditing, customer reporting, and other regulatory requirements of US State and national authorities.

“The Government of Somalia is extremely troubled by the closing of Remittance Companies’ banking accounts in the U.S and appeals to Banking Executives and US state and national authorities to reverse this decision.” said Somalia Prime Minister, Dr. Abdiweli Mohamed Ali.

“It saddens us that while the Somali people face extreme economic and financial challenges, including severe famine and drought in parts of the country, that this ill-timed decision has been made” Dr. Ali added.

In a press conference held in Mogadishu, Somalia, Dr. Ali thanked Congressman Keith Ellison, Senator Al Franken, and Senator Amy Klobuchar for their efforts in finding quick solutions to circumvent the negative effects of the decision by the Banks. The Prime Minister applauded the rightful judgment of Mr. David Reiling, Chief Executive Officer of Sunrise Community Banks for extending the closure deadline to 30 December 2011, and encouraged the Banks to allow for more time until proper solutions are found.

Prime Minister Dr. Ali also recognized the efforts of the Somali Community and Religious Leaders, particularly, those living in Minnesota for working with the banking authorities and elected officials to resolve this matter effectively.

Remittance businesses are the financial lifelines for millions of Somalis struggling to cope with the world’s worst humanitarian crisis in 60 years and decades of civil conflict. An estimated $2 Billion Dollars—one third of the annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Somalia and more than the annual donor contributions is channeled to Somalia through remittances and small money transfer businesses by Somalis in the Diaspora to support their relatives back home. Closing remittances will alienate and marginalize Somalis in the Diaspora and their needy families inside and outside Somalia.

Prime Minister Dr. Ali concluded that Remittances are the foundations for the Somali economy and without it; the already unstable economy will collapse and that he has written to U.S Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to request for intervention.
