At least 23 senior al-Shabab commanders have been killed in a US airstrike in central Somalia, Press TV reports.

Several Somali civilians have been also killed in the strike.

The incident took place on Saturday in the village of Ceel Garas on the outskirts of the town of Elbur, which serves as the largest military base for al-Shabab fighters in Somalia’s central regions.

“The situation is very tense after aerial attacks hit al-Shabab base in the area, killing 23 al-Shabab commanders,” a resident said.

Dozens of fighters who were injured in the attack have been transferred to a local hospital, the resident added.

No details were given about exact number of civilian casualties.

Many fighters and residents were reported to be leaving the town for fear of more attacks. Fighters were reportedly threatening people not to report the incident.

A Somali government official has confirmed the aerial attack was carried out to destroy al-Shabab’s military base.

It is the first time since 2008 that the US has conducted an airstrike against fighters in central Somalia.

In 2008, a US missile attack killed Aden Hashi Ayro, the founder of al-Shabab group, in central Somali town of Dhusamareb.

Somalia has been without a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew the country’s former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

The Horn of African country has been paralyzed by violence between al-Shabab fighters and government troops that are backed by African Union forces.
