The Libyan ambassador to Somalia Isse Rabii Anshour, has been granted political asylum from Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Mohammed. Anshour confirmed he was abandoning his post to reporters outside the Libyan embassy in Mogadishu.

In a joint press conference, Mohammed called on the Libyan people to respect the humanity and not harm Somali refugees as unrest and anti-Gaddafi’s protests continue. Anshour thanked Mohammed for granting him asylum and also called for an end to violence against foreigners in Libya.

The call comes after more than three Somali refugees were killed by Libyan protestors.

Abdulkadir Shabaki, a Somali refugee in Tripoli, said in an interview with Shabelle radio in Mogadishu that they are stranded in their home as violent clashes continue. Foreigners in Libya are targeted and killed by revolutionaries who believe them to be mercenaries brought in to prop up Gaddafi’s regime, according to Shabaki.
