Press Release
Friday, December 17, 2010

Responding to media allegations of causing civilian casualties, AMISOM commanders have confirmed that no indirect fire was targeted at Bakara Market on 16 December 2010.

Colonel Michael Ondoga, Uganda Contingent Commander, said “AMISOM has not shelled Bakara Market. Yesterday, our forces engaged extremists in the areas of Boondhere and Sigale in response to attacks
on our forces there.

These areas have been deserted by civilians since the extremists renewed attacks against AMISOM forces.

We can confirm that Ahmed Asalraac, overall Al Shabab commander in Sigale and Hodan sector, was among those killed along with several other fighters.

“AMISOM takes seriously its obligations under International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law and its own Rules of engagement which forbid the use of indirect fire weapons in civilian areas.

Bakara Market is a Force registered ‘No Fire Zone’ and no commander can authorise any indirect fire into this area.”
