Bulgarian forces will be deployed to fight Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden and off the coast of Somalia, the Cabinet decided on November 17 2010, Bulgarian media reported.

Bulgarian military personnel will participate in operation Ocean Shield, but according to the ruling, no more than five Bulgarian military personnel can be deployed at any one time.

Expenses will be covered by the budget of the Defence Ministry, the report said. “The participation of Bulgaria in Ocean Shield is an additional contribution to the country’s efforts in Operation Atalanta,” the report said.

European Union Naval Force Somalia – Operation Atlanta is a military operation conducted by the European Union to help “deter, prevent and repress acts of piracy and armed robberies off the coast of Somalia,” as noted by the official mission statement

Meanwhile, operation Ocean Shield is a maritime operation under Nato. It is currently being conducted in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, and aims to protect merchant and other civilian traffic from pirate attacks emanating from Somalia.
