WASHINGTON, May 16 2009 — U.S. military forces will not deploy to Somalia despite reports Eritrea is supplying arms to opponents of the Somalian government, a top U.S. diplomat said.

“This is an internal Somali matter,” Johnnie Carson, the Obama administration’s top official on Africa, told the BBC in a story aired Saturday.

Carson said he is seriously concerned by reports Eritrea is giving weapons to foreign fighters and Islamic hardliners who are trying to collapse Somalia’s government. The United States, however, has ruled out deploying 2,000 U.S. soldiers stationed in nearby Djibouti, Carson said.

Eritrea this week denied any involvement after more than 100 people were killed during eight days of fighting in Mogadishu and another 30,000 fled the capital, the British network reported.

As of Friday, the Somali government controlled just one major road in Mogadishu, with the aid of an estimated 4,350 African Union troops from Uganda and Burundi.
