MOGADISHU Somalia: Clerics are calling for peace as about 5,000 Somalis rally in their war-ravaged capital asking for the violence to end.
Sheik Ahmed Dahir Aweys says only Islamic law can bring peace to Somalia. Clan elder Mohamed Hassan Had told Thursday’s gathering there was no need to fight, since Ethiopian troops had withdrawn.
The Ethiopians entered Somalia in 2006 in support of the weak U.N.-backed government and drove an Islamic administration from power. They withdrew at the beginning of 2009.
Somalia’s new president, Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, is a former Islamist fighter considered a moderate by diplomats. He has reached out to his former allies but Islamic hard-liners are still fighting his government.
