Insurgents have staged mortar attacks against 3 military bases in North and South Mogadishu killing 33 Ethiopian and government soldiers.

The Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) has taken responsibility for the attacks and the killings of government officials in North and South Mogadishu.

Al-Shabab groups have also recaptured Bur Hakaba town and killed many soldiers at checkpoints between Baidoa and Bur Hakaba, carrying off millions of Somali shillings.

Thousands of people are facing starvation from Mogadishu to Afgoye, while others have chosen to flee the southern region after hearing US warplanes flying overhead.

Meanwhile, large crowds have gathered in Afgoye, 30 kilometers from Mogadishu to welcome Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hossein who has vowed to enter into talks with the anti-government groups who for their part, want Ethiopian soldiers to leave Somalia, before negotiations can take place.
