Dutch minister cancels Somalia trip after threats over Islam film.

THE HAGUE (AFP) – Dutch Development Minister Bert Koenders Friday cancelled a trip to Somalia due to threats over a film attacking Islam, after the Taliban in Afghanistan also promised attacks on Dutch soldiers if it is shown.

The film, by far-right parliamentarian Geert Wilders, has yet to be screened but the leader of the Freedom Party has said he intends to put it online in March.Koenders leaves Sunday for a trip to several Horn of Africa countries, but the Somalia leg has now been cancelled, his spokesman said Friday.

“The security services have advised him not to go,” Fransesco Mascini, the development ministry spokesman said. The Dutch government immediately criticized the threats with Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende saying: “We condemn all these threats, as well as those targetting Wilders.

Balkenende, speaking at the end of a cabinet meeting, said it was obvious that the film would provoke “extremely vehement reactions.

Wilders, 44, who plans to broadcast his film on the Internet in March, has complained that the Dutch government is pressuring him to cancel the project.

Afghanistan’s extremist Taliban movement warned Thursday it would step up attacks against Dutch soldiers if the “insulting” film was broadcast. There are around 1,500 Dutch troops in Afghanistan as part of a 40-nation NATO-led force that is helping the government battle an insurgency led by the ultra-religious Taliban who were in government between 1996 and 2001.

The film is “an insult to Islam,” a Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, told AFP.“We in Afghanistan will increase our attacks against Dutch forces if the film is broadcast,” he said in a telephone call from an unknown location.

Dutch business groups added their voice to the controversy Friday, calling on Wilders not to broadcast the film.

Three employers bodies in the Netherlands joined forces to issue a statement warning of “big risks to Dutch businesses and their employees in various countries,” if the film is shown.

The Dutch prime minister called on Wilders to consider the safety of Dutch citizens and businesses abroad and its troops as well as its international reputation. But Wilders remained adamant.

“The cabinet may kowtow and bow down before Islam. Me, I will never capitulate,” he responded. The film, which lasts about 15 minutes, is called “Fitna”, which in Arabic means war, or division, in the heart of Islam.

According to a Dutch newspaper that has seen early rushes, the film’s structure links images of current bloodletting in Muslim countries to chapters of the Koran.

It ends with an image of the prophet Mohammed which in itself is provocative: Muslims consider any depiction of Mohammed to be blasphemous.

Wilders is the leader of the Freedom Party, which has nine of 150 seats in parliament. Netherlands-Islam-diplomacy-farright-film
