Sierra Leone’s peacekeeping troops on Wednesday arrived in Somalia to join the African Union peacekeeping Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). “An advance team from the Sierra Leonean contingent arrived Tuesday in Somalia… They will operate alongside the Kenyan contingent,” AMISOM said here in a statement. Meet Hamda Yusuf: She’s 19, she’s a local slam poetry champion, and she wants to be the US ambassador to Somalia. At the Youth Speaks! Poetry Grand Slam last month, most of the poems performed on stage were punctuated by supportive hoots and shouts of, “Youth speaks!” from the packed crowd, culminating in rowdy choruses of applause. The process of political transition in Yemen is broadly on track but remains delicate and complex. Since his election President Hadi has demonstrated a commitment to tackling violent extremism and re-establishing security in Yemen. The security forces have successfully retaken territory held by Al Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), but AQAP continue to pose a serious threat. Attacks against Yemeni security forces are common and almost 100 Yemeni servicemen were killed in a bomb attack during preparations for the Unification Day Parade on 21 May 2012.
